About us - The Great Port-Vendres Tapestry Association
Enamoured of both the beauty and long and fascinating history of Port-Vendres, the Association was started in July 2015 to create a large tapestry of the history of Port-Vendres . The main objective was to build a tourist attraction for our town to ‘give back’ something to the place we had come to love.
The first panel was started in October 2015 - the coat of arms of Port-Vendres. At that stage there were but 2 embroiderers, but gradually others were attracted until there were 16 at the finish. Like Port-Vendres, formed by different peoples over centuries, the project reflects the varied influences of other places. None of those involved was born in Port-Vendres, most live here, but two still live in the United Kingdom, one in Eire and another in Norway. Since the group expanded beyond the first two, they have shared conversation, embroidery traditions and tea, on probably about 200 Wednesday afternoons. The past of Port-Vendres has been seen with fresh eyes – from England, Ireland, Russia, Scotland, the U.S.A., and France itself.
The project evolved to 21 panels, each 70 cm. square, now framed and gifted to the town of Port-Vendres. They will be first put on view in an exhibition in the Dome in October 2020 and then await their permanent home.
The panels depict the history of Port-Vendres from the Phoenicians to 2020, representing hours of research and interviews with local residents. There have been many discussions and decisions about how to present each historic theme and debates about artistic interpretation. There are around 80,000 stitches in each panel, demonstrating an investment of time by each of us. Countless hours have been put into generating interest to gain funds, from commercial and private people. Even our search for wool from the outset, with few other resources at the time, took much energy and effort.
In viewing our tapestry you are invited to travel over time and discover fascinating stories, from pre-history volcanos to the modern port. You can learn of the Romans, whose sunken ships and amphorae have been discovered in our harbour; the possible journey of Hannibal over the Pyrenees on his way to conquer Italy and atrocities wrought by Nazis as they exited our village towards the end of World War II. The tapestry celebrates the stories of the history of Port-Vendres, lovingly rendered in colourful detail to delight residents and visitors alike. “Every picture tells a story”.

Amoureuse de la beauté et de la longue et fascinante histoire de Port-Vendres, l'Association a vu le jour en juillet 2015 pour créer une grande tapisserie de l'histoire de Port-Vendres. L'objectif principal était de créer un attrait touristique pour notre ville afin de montrer notre reconnaisance à l'endroit que nous aimions. Le premier panneau a été lancé en octobre 2015 - les armoiries de Port-Vendres. A ce stade, il n'y avait que 2 brodeuses, mais progressivement d'autres ont été attirées jusqu'à ce qu'il y en ait 16 à l'arrivée. Comme Port-Vendres, formé par différents peuples au fil des siècles, le projet reflète les influences variées d'autres lieux. Aucune des personnes impliquées n'est native de Port-Vendres, la plupart y vivent, mais deux vivent toujours au Royaume-Uni, un en Irelande et une autre en Norvège. Depuis que le groupe s'est élargi au-delà des deux premières, ils ont partagé la conversation, les traditions de broderie et le thé, probablement environ 200 mercredis après-midi. Le passé de Port-Vendres a été vu d'un œil nouveau - d'Angleterre, d'Irlande, de Russie, d'Écosse, des États-Unis et de la France elle-même. Le projet a évolué vers 21 panneaux de 70 cm X 70 cm, désormais encadrés et offerts à la ville de Port-Vendres. Ils seront d'abord presentés dans une exposition au Dôme en octobre 2020, puis attendront leur résidence permanente. Ils dépeignent l'histoire de Port-Vendres des Phéniciens à 2020, représentant des heures de recherches et d'entretiens avec les riverains. Il y a eu de nombreuses discussions et décisions sur la façon de présenter chaque thème historique et les débats sur l'interprétation artistique. Il y a environ 80 000 points dans chaque panneau, ce qui démontre un investissement de temps par chacune de nous. D'innombrables heures ont été consacrées à générer de l'intérêt pour recolter des fonds auprès de personnes commerciales et privées. Même notre recherche de laine dès le départ, avec peu d'autres ressources à l'époque, a demandé beaucoup d'énergie et d'efforts. En regardant notre tapisserie, vous êtes invités à voyager dans le temps et à découvrir des histoires fascinantes, des volcans de la préhistoire au port moderne. Vous pouvez en apprendre davantage sur les Romains, dont les navires coulés et les amphores ont été découverts dans notre port; l'éventuel voyage d'Hannibal à travers les Pyrénées en route vers la conquête de l'Italie et les atrocités commises par les nazis à leur sortie de notre village vers la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. La tapisserie retrace l'histoire de Port-Vendres, brodées avec amour dans des détails colorés pour ravir les habitants et les visiteurs. "Chaque tableau raconte une histoire".
